INDIANA VOTES TO RETURN POWER BACK TO HOOSIERS – BECOMES THE 6TH STATE TO CALL FOR AN ARTICLE V CONVENTION OF STATES TO REIN IN THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT

IndianaFlag-shutterstock_136884554.jpgINDIANAPOLIS, IN, March 1—Indiana’s 119th General Assembly made history as the House passed Senate Joint Resolution 14 (SJR14) with the final vote 61-36, calling for a Convention of States to propose amendments under Article V of the United States Constitution. The resolution, drafted by the Convention of States Project (COSP), calls for a convention to propose amendments on the following topics: “impose fiscal restraints on the federal government, limit the power and jurisdiction of the federal government, and limit the terms of office for its officials and for members of Congress.”

Volunteers take the day at Indianapolis!

two_young_COS_volunteers.jpeg

With the help of many volunteers, Convention of States Indiana has kicked off the 2016 legislative season with an incredible victory!

Pictured above are the two young men who stole the show at our committee hearing. On the left is Case, from Indiana Wesleyan University. On the right is Sam, an 18 year old high school student. It must have been intimidating to walk into that room and testify. They both gave compelling, articulate and optimistic testimony regarding the Convention of States Project.   Even our biggest opponent gave them kudos and said they must have wonderful parents.

Call to Action: Contact Senator Buck

This is an exciting time for COS as our Resolution SJR14 heads into a committee hearing Monday Jan 25th, at 9:00 am. Unfortunately we have learned that your Senator, James Buck will vote NO and refuses to support SJR14. This could be the deciding vote to stop us dead in our tracks!

COS SURGE AT THE STATEHOUSE- January 12, 2016

Last Wednesday we completed our first COS SURGE at the Statehouse and secured more support. Volunteers came from all over the state to hand deliver educational articles regarding COS. We wore COS buttons and became a visual cue to everyone in the building. We had several success stories including one volunteer, William Fenley of Greensburg who took the day off work to join us. William notified his legislator that he was in the building and would like to speak with her. She made time for an appointment along with COS leadership and discussed our plan. She is in agreement and will vote YES! That is self governance IN ACTION. Constituents showing up IN PERSON speaks volumes about the importance of our issue.

The Convention of States Team in Indiana will be heading to the Indiana State House to hand deliver articles about the Article V process and the goals of the Convention of States Project to legislators starting on the opening day of the next session of the 127th on January 6th.  We will be meeting at 8:45 on the 3rd floor outside the House Chambers on Jan 6th, 12, 20, 27, Feb 3, 10, 17, 24, and March 2nd. We would like a minimum of 10 volunteers each week.

This is going to be a great opportunity not only for our state legislators to learn more about their duty and authority under Article V of the U.S. Constitution, but also for our grassroots activists from around the state to build strong relationships with them.
